Dog Training

The Newfoundland dog is renowned for its exceptional swimming capabilities, a trait developed through centuries of working with fishermen in the cold waters off Newfoundland. Key adaptations include webbed feet, a powerful and unique “breaststroke” swimming style, a thick, water-resistant double coat for insulation and buoyancy, and a strong, muscular build. These physical attributes, combined with an instinctive drive to rescue, have made Newfoundlands excellent water rescue dogs, historically saving countless lives and continuing to be trained for such roles in places like Italy and France. They can swim at speeds comparable to an average human, around 1 to 3 miles per hour, and are capable of pulling heavy loads, even multiple people in a lifeboat.
